Tanks To See On The Road Between Imber Village & Warminster
The most attractive route to Imber village, when the village is open, and the only one with any tanks to see, starts at Harman Lines, at the top of Sack Hill, Warminster where there is an FV4201 Chieftan tank and an FV601 Saladin armoured car . You will see plenty of FV4201 Chieftan tanks, in wrecked condition, abandoned for target practice either side of the road. Don't leave the carriageway to see them, there's no need, and you may lose a leg from unexploded ordnance. The FV4201 Chieftain was the primary main battle tank (MBT) of the United Kingdom from the 1960s into the 1990s, so they are long out of active service.
Living in Warminster I've been able to enjoy the 6 mile route several times, either by car or Tramper off-road mobility scooter (no other mobility scooter can make the steep climb) and unless you want to visit St Giles Church (recommended) sunrise and sunset can make for some dramatic sights.
Once you've made the steep climb from Imber Road, up Sack Hill, Warminster keep going past Harman Lines, you are about to enter a small part of the military training zone of Salisbury Plain, where military from friendly countries all over the world including Ukraine, come to add to their training. About half of Salisbury Plain, 150 square miles, is controlled by the Department of Defence, and as good as the Imber experience is, you will only see a small part of it, that in itself is impressive. When you see lookout towers on your left after Harman lines, start looking for abandoned tanks both sides of the road for the next half mile or so, after that you've past them all.
